Low Cost Prosthetic Hand

The non-profit organization Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), based in India, currently provides lower limb prosthetics at a low cost and have recently expressed interest in expanding into prosthetic arms. The overarching goal of this project is to develop a low-cost, powered prosthetic hand for BMVSS’ transradial (below elbow) amputees. This project is my graduate capstone project which I started work on in January 2024.

The prosthetic shown with green fingers was the first prototype that was designed by a previous team that worked on this project. Since then, I have overhauled the entire design which can be seen by the prototypes in the images provided. My prototype is 50% lighter than the previous design, under $300 dollars to manufacture, and much easier to assemble. Commercially available prosthetic hands often cost thousands to tens of thousands of dollars.

In February 2024, I will be traveling to Jaipur, India to test with local amputees.
